My World Tuesday - Manchester Construction

This week's My World, and perhaps other posts in the future, will be photo contributions from my wonderful fiance's world. We have quite a unique relationship because for now, he still lives in Manchester, England, while I live "across the pond" in Delaware which is in the United States. I spend several weeks a year living in Manchester with him and decided I'd like to feature some of the area which is unique and rich with history.(I'll hopefully be posting some of my own photos taken there in future blog posts).

So without further ado, the following photos are of a future office and retail building (named Fabrica),  under construction that sits across the street from where he lives. Plans for a hotel by the chain Ibis, is also in the works.

He reports that this is part of an ongoing project to revitalize the area historically known as Ancoats, (now renamed New Islington as part of the revitalization efforts), which was a bustling metropolis during the Industrial Revolution, but unfortunately fell into major disrepair a century later.

The building's name, Fabrica, and the design, is inspired by the cotton history that this area was a part of back during the industrial revolution (1750-1850). The Manchester area was nicknamed Cottonopolis because it became center of all cotton (over 100 cotton mills built in the area!) and textile trading in the early 19th century.

This area, while under revitalization, still has many of the original buildings, canals and bridges that existed over a century ago. It's a neat place to take a stroll (when the weather is cooperative) and view both the historic buildings of the Victorian era, and the modern future buildings, all within one city.
