Our World Tuesday - Red Caboose Motel

Welcome to the Red Caboose Motel located in Ronks, Pennsylvania!

Travelers in the Lancaster, PA (aka Amish Country) area can visit, spend a night in one of the 38 cabooses, or eat in their dining car (there's even a toy train museum next door). I've stayed here many years ago as a teen, and this past weekend I stopped by to visit the little farm they have on the grounds.

This neat motel first started out as a silly dare in 1969 when Don Denlinger bid and won (for $100) an auction for nineteen cabooses being auctioned off by the Pennsylvania Railroad. He moved his winnings to a bit of farm land near Lancaster and converted them into motel rooms. Over the years a new owner has taken over and not only refurbished them, but acquired more cabooses, and is now listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records for the most owned cabooses.
